Many people use the two terms “web design” and “web development” interchangeably, but they really do have two different meanings. If you’re looking for a new job or someone to build your website, you need to know the difference.
Web development is the back-end of the website; the programming and interactions on the pages. A web developer focuses on how a site works and how the customers get things done on it. Good web developers know how to program CGI and scripts like PHP. They understand about how web forms work and can keep a site running effectively.
Web developers, sometimes called programmers, take the design created and build a fully functioning website. Traditionally, developers took the static designs and broke it down into components. They then either used programming languages such as HTML and PHP to develop website pages that reproduced the designs. Web developers may convert a static layout into a dynamic website by using image and content sliders, active states for links and buttons and other interactive elements.
More advanced web developers may choose to utilise a Content Management System (CMS) like WordPress or Joomla in order to allow clients an easy way to maintain and update their website. Content Management Systems also allow multiple people to work on a website independently and simultaneously.
Strict web development involves programming the HTML and CSS in line with web standards and then integrating this code into a CMS. Custom web development is then undertaken to fill any of the functionality gaps before thorough testing is carried out across the website. Website development requires a very different set of skills to web design. In web development the focus is on functionality and usability sometimes at the cost of attraction, communication and aesthetics.
Our people have experience working with WordPress, Joomla and Magento. From a more general point of view, we have experience working with the following technologies: ASP.NET, C#, Microsoft SQL Server, AJAX, jQuery, XML, Flash, PHP, MySQL, Ruby on Rails and Perl.
All that said, writing code is not our focus. We are designers first and foremost. Communication comes first and then we locate the best talent to implement the appropriate technology. This gives us the flexibility to fulfill the needs from a wide variety of clients and industries.
